Becki
I have had diabetes for about 3 years, so it's not new to me, but the
endocrinologist is. This is the first time that I have been to one. Thanks
for the encouragement.

Good Morning....sorry that I have been a little quiet but I have been
very busy at work and under too much stress. It is only 2 weeks until we
have the children full time and we do not have the staff hired and one
quit (not the one I wanted to quit) and we will have over 100 kids
running around and maybe not enough help. I have so many things so do
before they show up. I just got the may newsletter out and now must
start working on the june one. Where does the time go. Last night I had
a late meeting and I checked my sugars at 6 and was 95. I took my
insulin and ate a snack of peanuts, m and m's, and raisins. It was about
a third of a cup. I started to feel better. The meeting didn't get over
until after 7 and then we came home got here at about 8 fixed fresh green
beans, small baked potato with sour cream and a small steak of salmon.
We ate after 9 and then was going to go to bed but when we went to the
bedroom the water bed had leaked so we were up to 11 trying to fix it.
Just a little more stress to add tomy day. Needless to say this a.m. I
<!--more-->
was 244. I was not a happy camper because usually that meal is very kind
to me. This pace i can not keep up. Gail you asked if anyone else at
the club haseye problem. No....I am the first legally blind person that
they have hired at any club in Tampa. I few have eye problems but I am
the only one classified as handicapped that way. I am the only on at my
club. We did have another volunteer who was legally blind about a year
ago but she did not work out too well. Lorette, I feel the anguish and
fear in your posts. You are on the right track. It goes slowly but you
will find out the answers that you are seeking. You do need to ask the
right questions and I took feel that it is important to write them down
in the importance that you need answers to. I was told to have at least
5 questions everytime I went. I would hand them to the endo when I
walked in and let him answer them before I left. He only had so much tme
so this way I did not have to try and remember what I wanted to say or
ask under pressure. Also I too took in all the records that I keep at
home. The blood tests, and blood pressure tests that I take everyday.
He wants to keep the blood pressure down to protect the kidneys and of
course your heart. You should really call his office and get in for
tests like an a1c, etc. so when you go you willl know the results and not
have to go back right away for more. You can ask his office about the
peptide-c test, 24 hour kidney (urine) test, liver test, and maybe
chorlesterol test so he has current results to deal with. Some doctors
will allow this. At least he should get the records from you gp so he
can check them over before you come in. Really though Lorette, worrying
about seeing him or being anxious is just hurting you. If your sugar
reading taken at least 2 times a day are pretty good you will be ok until
you see the doc. If you really want to check your sugars for you and
not anyone else. Do it before each meal and before you exercise and
before bed. Also if you want to really see how you are doing after 2
hours of eatting or exercise you can take that reading also. When I was
first diagnosised they had me checking 7 times a day. I was not
exercising because I was in a wheel chair so none then. They also asked
me to record when I ate and what I ate and how much. This all helped me
to get the right help for my nutritionist to get me with my life change
and my famlies life change and to help me to start counting carbos. You
are hearing so much information in a short time what can be overwhelming.
Just slow down the smell the roses . It will all come together. You
said, I believe that this is all pretty new to you. Let the grieving get
done and let the acceptance take over. I have been there are a person
who got it later in life and almost died because of complications. I
lost a job, my self esteem, and almost my life but I can honestly say
that you CAN live with it and it does not have to control it. You
control it and your professional help. You are the person who is a
diabetic. They can instruct you and inform you but it is up to you to
decide that you are in command and directing your own program to success.
We are behind you 100 %. Hang in there!!! Connie, Babs, Janet,Deena,
Iris, Jan, and Marius, it is good to see that you are all up and posting.
I was glad to hear that Wendy is doing better and Gail had a great trip.
We are glad that she is home safely. Also that Iris survived another
birthday. Did you hear how John treated her. Also was a little nervous
about your low you had the other day Iris. I know it is late in writing
but I have not checked my emails faithfully lately. Last but not least
is my friend, Christine, Good Luck girl today. my prayers and thoughts
are with you. Have a great day to all. Must start my day now, and get
this sugar under control Hugs to all ...Becki

How's your patch doing? My goodness, Gail and Christine, I have never been

Jan,
I love to be up in the dark and watch the day break. I always have. i do get
sleepy in the afternoon but then get a second wind after dinner. I have been
staying up very late these days. I think I have been only getting 4 hours of
sleep a night.
When are the results from the bone scan due?

Christine,
*john* called at 5:30 a.m. so answered the *call* and took my empty-stomach
pills, read my 9 messages and decided to go back to bed. Slept 'til after
10:00 a.m.
I supposed to go to the backologist today but think I'll put it off until I
hear about that bone scan. The shot is at the hospital/specialty clinic
every other week. (EPO)
Connie will let us know when she's back. She went *no mail* the other day.

this time and it WILL be permanent.
Gail......I read that you are using an inhaler........what is wrong? How are
you feeling?
Jan......I hope you are also feeling better. You got PAID for your speech!
Pretty exciting, huh? How is Mr. Jan's BG these says?
Iris.......did you do your food shopping? I hope today is a day without much
pain.
I hope everyone is having a good day and no one is suffering from the Monday

Study Touts Combination of Diabetes Drugs
CHICAGO (Reuters) - One of a new class of drugs used to treat
adult-onset diabetes appears to yield better overall treatment when
combined with an older drug used for the condition, according to a study
published on Tuesday.
The report found that a combination of rosiglitazone, sold as Avandia by
SmithKline Beecham PLC, and metformin, sold as Glucophage by Bristol
Myers Squibb Co. -- appeared to slow progression of the disease.
``Using Glucophage alone often fails over time and many patients require
the addition of another drug to adequately control their diabetes,´´
said Vivian Fonseca of Tulane University, lead author of the study.
``This study shows that combining Avandia with Glucophage may prevent
the long-term complications of diabetes such as heart disease,
blindness, limb loss and kidney failure, by providing more effective
blood sugar control than Glucophage alone.´´
Glucophage is one of an older class of oral diabetes drugs while
rosiglitazone is one of a new group called thiazolidinediones which act
by making muscle cells more sensitive to insulin.
The study, published in this week's Journal of the American Medical
Association, covered 348 patients. It was financed in part by
SmithKline.
It came on the heels of a recent decision by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration to ask Warner-Lambert Co., to pull another member of the
newer class of diabetes drugs, Rezulin, from the market. The FDA said
that drug had possibly been a factor in 63 liver failure deaths.
A third drug in the newer category, pioglitazone, is also approved for
use in combination with metformin. It is sold under the Actos brand by
Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., and Eli Lilly and Co.
``With the recent withdrawal of Rezulin, these study results are good
news for physicians and patients looking for a safe and effective
alternative to manage their Type 2 diabetes,´´ said Brian Jones, a
spokesman for SmithKline Beecham.

to All,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I had a very nice day. I think I
mentioned that I was told not to test on Christmas and enjoy the food. Well,
I sure did! I had more carbs than I usually eat (I ate mostly carbs!) and
let me tell you...I didn't like the tired, full feeling I had. I did test
anyway and my BG was fine all day. I just wanted to go to bed though. So for
me, Keeping my carbs low is best.
I miss hearing from everyone. I hope you are all well.

to All,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I had a very nice day. I think I
mentioned that I was told not to test on Christmas and enjoy the food. Well,
I sure did! I had more carbs than I usually eat (I ate mostly carbs!) and
let me tell you…I didn’t like the tired, full feeling I had. I did test
anyway and my BG was fine all day. I just wanted to go to bed though. So for
me, Keeping my carbs low is best.
I miss hearing from everyone. I hope you are all well.
Shelia,
Sounds like you are a very busy lady right now! Enjoy preparing that meal. I
always liked having holiday dinners at my house. Now it is just my one sister
and another couple for every holiday and we take turns. I miss my LARGE
family so much at this time of the year.
I will be happy to share my way of eating with you after the holidays. I
really am finding it so easy to stick to. We can talk about it on the list or
you can email me privately. What ever you would like to do.
Merry Christmas and God Bless,
Christine
