lo-carb diets
Although I am on the Atkins plan myself I would never put a child on it
without a doctor’s advice, let alone a type 1 diabetic. I would not be
on this myself if it had not been suggested by my endo who has an
excellent reputation in this area and tends to stay away from fad type
things. (She was not willing to put me on several medications that I had
heard other diabetics using successfully because she was not satisfied
that there had been enough testing with diabetics) I did ask her at the
last visit about possible kidney damage. She told me that she would not
have recommended it for me if she had any indication that I had any
kidney problems and stressed the importance of drinking lots of water.
This is just my opinion, but I think one of the reasons it seems
successful for type 2’s is that many of us suffer from obesity and any
diet that reduces weight is going to bring bg down.
What I am enjoying about the plan is that now that I have eliminated
most of the major high carb foods (bread, pasta, potato) I don’t get as
hungry and I don’t crave some of these things. I would like to say that
I never crave sugar but I am one of those people who really gets turned
on by sight food cues and seeing the cake on the counter at school
drives me as crazy as it ever did. (smell too… maybe even more than
sight, the smell of the chocolate frosting… *LOL*)
Using heavy cream instead of milk is about the oddest thing on this plan
but I sure do enjoy my morning cup of decaf with it *LOL*

I agree with you, Karen. I was a real pasta and bread nut and since I really
restrict them, I don’t care one way or the other. I now saute chopped
eggplant with garlis and fresh basil and onions and add that to my 1/2 cup of
wheat pasta and enjoy it very much.

Karen,
I’m glad that the Atkins diet is working so well for you. I remember when
my entire family was on a low carb diet back in the early 80’s, we all lost
a lot of weight. I didn’t like all the vitamin supplements though. Does
Atkins discuss the use of vitamin supplements? My mom took Lethicin
granules in tomato juice. That was the nastiest smelling stuff! The
lethicin granules were especially important for women on a weight loss
plan. When you lose weight, you lose it all over, including the bust. The
granules somehow kept my mom from losing inches in the bust, but she still
lost in the waist, hips, thighs, etc. She tried to get me to take them too,
but I couldn’t get past the smell and the pills didn’t have the same benefit
as the granules.
I don’t think I could ever cut my carbs back as low as Dr. Atkins advises.
It was hard to cut back to 60/day so many years ago. I guess that starch
(in moderation) is too important a part of my meal plan.

P.S. Just a few minutes ago Dateline had a segment on Dr. Atkins and his
diet. Very interesting.
