Jan’s son’s humor

Saturday, August 23rd, 2003

Like mother, like son:
You know, I’ve said I’m glad the Lord gave me a sense of humor because it’s
so easy to cry. Well, son has one too. They took a CaTScan. He asked how
many cats they found. BTW, he’s 37.5.

Jan’s son’s situation

Saturday, August 23rd, 2003

Like mother, like son! 8^ ( Got a call about noon 9/27 that our son fell
from a house roof 169 miles away. He was coating it with a silvery tar and
slipped on some. Grabbed the the guttering, which scraped his arms (3-4
stitches in left), then dropped on his heels, then bottom. He broke 3
vertabrae, one is 70% *filled.*. Wednesday afternoon they will open his
side, move his diaphragm, move his kidney over and remove the vertabra,
graft a bone in and put it in a metal shaft. Dr. said he should get up
Thursday! He’ll be in a brace about 3 months. His heels are bruised and
butt’s sore. They had to throw his clothes away. One pant leg was ripped -
probably saved him from a cut.
We got home at 1:00 a.m. I had 2 medical appts. yesterday (cancelled) and
have to catch up today and give a motivational speech tonight. We’ll go back
Wednesday. So glad we got the ‘96 minivan a couple of weeks ago!!
My back still hurts - *popped* a couple places. Will see backologist
again today. Doesn’t hurt to drive. 8^) Alternating ice bags helps lots.

Goodnight Marius,
The cravings for a cigarette are real srong so I am going to prune up in a
real hot bath and go to bed. I hope someone else joins you so you won’t get
lonely.
I sure hope Jan is feeling better real soon.
Take care,
Christine

Strawberries and carbs

Tuesday, August 19th, 2003

According to my “Meal Plan for a Healthy Lifestyle”, fresh/frozen strawberries
are listed at 1-1/4 cups for one carb choice/exchange (15 grams). I just love
strawberries!

almost!!!

I’m so glad to be able to sit here and “talk” to you,
on Sunday we went to the airport to watch the model airplanes.
After a while, four “real” planes landed, one was a WW2 Harvard. I
went to have a look at this magnificent plane and the pilot of one of
the other planes asked me if I wanted to go for a flip. They had
come from a town in Zululand where they took part in an air stunt
show. Newcastle was their refuelling stop back home to
Johannesburg.
I declined the offer as I did not have any toiletpaper with me and
carry no spare nether garments.
We heard over the news that that same stunt plane crashed about
an hour after take off, killing the pilot.

Speaking of carb counting

Tuesday, August 12th, 2003

I’m on 1500 calories a day with 190 grams of carbohydrates. That works out
to about 12.6 carb exchanges for the whole day which I have to admit often
feels pretty skimpy to me. Speaking of carbs, though, does anyone know the
carb count for strawberries? I bought some beauties today and I’m not sure
how many to pack in my lunch for tomorrow.

9 g of carbs? WOW you must have a lot of willpower! Atkins induction
is 20 g. I try to stay between 20-25, varies. The thing I have learned
is how many hidden carbs exist. There are things that have less than one
carb per serving so they can legally list it as 0 but when you get more
than one serving it adds up. I just recently learned that eggs have
carbs, heavy cream (although less than skim milk), aspartame, and many
products that are listed as “sugar free”.

lo-carb diets

Sunday, August 10th, 2003

Although I am on the Atkins plan myself I would never put a child on it
without a doctor’s advice, let alone a type 1 diabetic. I would not be
on this myself if it had not been suggested by my endo who has an
excellent reputation in this area and tends to stay away from fad type
things. (She was not willing to put me on several medications that I had
heard other diabetics using successfully because she was not satisfied
that there had been enough testing with diabetics) I did ask her at the
last visit about possible kidney damage. She told me that she would not
have recommended it for me if she had any indication that I had any
kidney problems and stressed the importance of drinking lots of water.
This is just my opinion, but I think one of the reasons it seems
successful for type 2’s is that many of us suffer from obesity and any
diet that reduces weight is going to bring bg down.
What I am enjoying about the plan is that now that I have eliminated
most of the major high carb foods (bread, pasta, potato) I don’t get as
