Chat - Great Balls of Fire!

Christine,
I still don’t know what caused the power problems. Thankfully I only saw some
blue light reflections instead of the fire balls. The power line broke and was
laying in the ditch. I don’t know which came first, the chicken or the egg <G
excuse me, I mean the fire balls or the broken power line. Hubby was very
bored,
kept trying to use the remote to change the candles! We didn’t get our power
back on until after 10:30 last night.

Ball lightning sometimes occurs in the vicinity of powerlines.
Also called St Elmo’s fire. Sometimes also occurs on the wingtips
of planes flying at high altitudes.

Not lightning but also called St Elmo’s fire, a discharge of static
electicity at the wingtips. Very visible.

Connie, I noticed your post about the power problem. I have been dealing
with the same except mine blew up at my pole and sent straight electricity
through my house blowing everything up plugged in a socket. I lost all our
TV’s and VCR’s it damaged my computer really bad that is why I am just now
getting back online. The power line that blew was laying in my yard and was
catching everything on fire around it. The fire dept came and said if I had
not been home our house would have burnt down along with our woodshop and
well. I used dish water from my sink to keep the fire away from a butane
tank. It was very very very scary. When I close my eyes I can still see
things blowing up. My sugars have been high ever since. I went to the doctor
in Houston on Friday and he increase my glucopage by 500 mg to try to help me
get back down. He said my stress level was most likely from that. The
electric company took responsibility for it and did settle with us but not
for enough to replace everything. I would find out what caused that because
we have been having alot of power surges this summer and it was because of a

worn line that needed to be replace and that is what caused our blow out. We
are fine now and bgs are alot lower today but it was very scary. Hugs Shelia

May I suggest that you invest in a “surge” adapter or lightning
    protector in future?
I have bought one last month, gives peace of mind.
It protects against power surges and lightning, blows a small fuse
inside the adapter itself before any damage can be done to
    appliances.
Surely if we have it in Darkest Africa then you must have
    something far superior!!!

Hey Marius, Do you know that is what saved my computer was having a surge
protector? I did have it on all my stuff however they were not very good,
well I say that but the power that went through my house was very strong and
sparks were flying out of every socket and smoke was the end result. Those
protectors do pay off. Nite nite Mr Sir Marius. Please don’t dream of the
    Queen tonite!! Hugs Shelia :O)

  9. harvey900 Says:

    Sheila,
We were really lucky that we didn’t get any surges from the power lines. I use
    a
surge protector on all of our electronics. Surge protectors sometimes provide a
false sense of security. The joules rating on the surge protector determines
    the
real amount of protection. If we were to take a direct hit from lightning or
something like that, they wouldn’t provide much protection. Another thing that
    I
have learned, sometimes power spikes can come through the cable tv line. Our
    vcr
got fried earlier this summer from a power spike. The tv and stereo that were
    on
the same surge protector were fine, but the vcr, which was first in line from
    the

cable, got hit. From what I understand, you can even get spikes from the phone
    line!
When our power lines went down, it had rained just a few days before so there
wasn’t any fire. We’re still in a drought in central and southern Indiana and
farmer’s fields have been burning like crazy because it is soooooooo dry.
I hope your bgs are settling down. I know stress can really mess them up.

Hey guys, check with the electric company/ I got their surge protection
for $5 a month and it covers my whole house appliances and computers, and
tv and telelphone. If lightning comes into the house through the meter
etc. it is covered. It is worth the peace of mind. I would hate to lose
    my computer for that. Becki

  11. hollis_1300 Says:

Becky, I wish our electric company offered such a deal but they do not. We
are having alot of conservancy over this company. They are horrible. We
could not even get a personal response from anyone there. It was a very
stressful and frustrating experience. If you have that I am jealous. It
would put us at a peace of mind. I find myself going around and unplugging
things I am not using. It is kinda like a phobia with me now. Shelia :O(
