Digest Number 408

Hello from Southern California! Please forgive my lurking about for the
past week or so. I was just introduced to onelist by my neice and signed up
for about four lists … which of course filled my mailbox to the brim.
(I’m trying “digest” format now.)
Anyhow, in addition to being a newbie at onelist, I’m also a relative newbie
in the diabetic category. Well, actually, it’s my daughter who is (T1)
diabetic. She is only 4. She was diagnosed last year right after
Thanksgiving (12/1/98). We had been noticing, for a few weeks or so prior,
that she was very thirsty and was making many trips to the bathroom - every
few hours. That rang so many bells in my head …
I have two children, and both pregnancies were complicated by “gestational
diabetes” (I know - hardly real diabetes at all). My family always talked
about my father’s father having Type 2 and pouring tons of sugar in his
coffee (having a little coffee with his sugar)! But even more than that,
the fact that my parents first child, my brother, died at the age of 4 in

(of?) a diabetic coma, caused my dad to always warn me to look out for this.
I can only wonder what it was like for my parents to go through such an
experience … it happened way before I was born. Anyhow, we discovered the
truth before having any trumatic hospital experiences and I KNOW how
fortunate that is. Nevertheless I was soooo tense for the first few months
it was horrible. After that I relaxed, and she relaxed, and things went
much smoother.
Ali is using humilin and very small amounts of humalog, shots 2x daily. I
believe she is still somewhat in the honeymoon stage.
I can tell you all have had lots of experiences and I really appreciate the
sharing that goes on here.
About glycemic index: We were told “a carb is a carb” in the end also, but
I believe it’s still useful to judge the relative “speeds”
of different food choices (”fast carbs” vs. more complex or “slow carbs”)
sometimes. BTW, where can I get the biggest or best glycemic index list? I
saw one somewhere, but it didn’t seem to have a whole lot of foods listed.
Well, it’s time for bedtime snack … ice cream. Goodnight all.

In certain parts of the world people pray in the streets.
Over here they are known as PEDESTRIANS.
