Gang,,,I went to my diabetic local support group and someone asked about
the Atkins diet for diabetics and I thought that she was going to hit the
roof. She said that that subject was another whole lesson but she was
totally against the diet for a healthy way for diabetics to control their
sugars. She is a trained diabetic educator and felt that it was really
not the way to go. I know that we have discussed different ideas about
weight loss and weight control but she really scared me about using that
theory to control my sugars. Just a thought…Becki

Becki….I am on a lowcarb foodplan that is a little like Atkins. It is with
full blessings from my doctor and my certified nutritionist/dietician. I do
watch my fats and proteins, which is different from Atkins. I worry also
about those who use straight Atkins. There is no limit on fats or protein. A
body needs food from each food group, but for each person it is different how
much from each. There is still much controversy over low carb. I think
because most people do associate lowcarbing with the Atkins program.
Have a good night,

Christine,
I too eat lower carb counts about 1 and a half for breakfast, 4 to 5
for lunch and 3 to 4 for supper with no snacks unless I go low. Put I
also watch my protein to protect my kidneys and of course I know that fat
and salt is bad for you. The doc. has me on a chorlesteral pill but my
chorlesteral was not terrible. He just wants it lower to protect my
heart. I agree to be healthy you need food from all categories but the
Atkins diet does not seem to healthy for a diabetic especially all the
protein etc. that you can eat is ok. I really think that if everyone
would just cut their intake back, exercise and watch that you eat a
variety of foods they would be healthier. I watch my exchanges quite
carefully because I want the treats every so often. It is hard to be so
rigid when there are food that you crave. They might not be as healthy
as something else but it will not kill you to eat something once in a
blue moon. Becki

Becki, I am a little scared about this diet also. My husband is healthy and
does not have the challenges I have and always does well on the Adkins diet.
I always get sick on it after about 2 days and never stay on it. I asked my
doctor about it and he said ok as long as I balance the fat and carbs and not
be completey cold turkey on the diets. He was also speaking about the Carbs
Addict diet that is so popular now. I lost a lot of weight a few years ago
watching my fat I did it on the T factor diet. He said to follow that and
just not eat as much carbs. So I think I will count both for a week and just
see how it goes. I need so bad to exercise I need to loose at least 50lbs. I
am in the mood to diet so I just need to do it. Is anyone up for a
challenge?? Hugs Shelia :O)

Hi
I just joined so maybe I should not bud in. I am a dietitian and I have
done the Atkins diet (known in the medical world as a Protein Sparing
Modified Fast) with some of my diabetic patients, including one who was
on a fairly large dose of insulin.
With close monitoring (I saw them weekly and they could always call),
none had problems. The good news was, if you stuck with it, the diet
worked. The bad news was, it was boring.
The fella on insulin had been on many diets before; could not stick with
them. He was also desperate to get off insulin. He lost 40 pounds and
was not only taken off his insulin but also his blood pressure and lipid
lowering meds. Two years later he remains off of them.
My fellow dietitians do not agree with the diet. I think it is not for
everyone but it does work.

Gail what do you think about the Carb Addict diet or Sugar busters? I read
both and my only problem is that it seems there are still alot of carbs.

Yep, I agree with you about the carbs in the Sugar Busters and the Carb
Addict diets. The diabetics I know who have done well on these diets
are the ones who can’t stand meat anymore…probably cause they did the
Atkins diet before!
My personal opinion is that the Atkins diet can be done once every
couple of years; not that it’s a bad diet but that the thought of
stomaching it again is hard. I did it too and decided I really don’t
like meat that much. So, for myself, I would opt for the Sugar Busters.

I think we are all individuals and need to treat our lifestyles as such. Any
program that reduces the amount of food you eat and gets you moving more is a
good healthy plan. Some people can eat a lot of fats and have low
cholesterol. I happen to one of those people. BUT I don’t want to find out
somewhere down the road that suddenly my cholesterol is way up. Moderation I
think is the best way to go. I do know that too many carbs, simple or
complex, sends my sugar up. Moderation is the key factor for me.

Thank Gail, I will look at it again. I never realized how the carbs
affected the sugars. My doctor suggested to watch my fat and to allow about
100 carbs a day. He is very supportive of it. I just can’t seem to get
started on it. I am up to 2000mg of glucopage a day and I hate it. The side
affects are killing me. I did ok on 1000mg and was kinda ok on 15oomg. but
the 2000 is hard. SO I just need to take control and get some weight off.
The days are cooler and there is no excuse. Hugs Shelia

Just watch the blood sugars when you do this diet. It has been my
experience that meds have to be adjusted (lower amounts) within a week
or less of starting the diet. For my patient on insulin, he continued
to check blood sugars 4 times a day and was decreasing the insulin being
taken in under a week. I just mention this because I would not want you
to have hypoglycemia because of the almost carb-less diet.
