If my 60-year-old mind can reach that far back, I know how you feel. My
thought was, why would anybody want to go to more school? I was the first in
the family (ever) to graduate from high school. I was never encouraged to do
homework, never praised for good grades (made honor roll 5 times out of 20
by taking my history book home every night to impress the teachers - but
didn’t open it), missed about 6 weeks of school in 6th gr. due to pre-,
during, and post-coma. But I did take to heart what a teacher in high school
told us: If you don’t go to college, at least read one book a year for the
rest of your life. That will continue your education.
I was not given much hope to live with IDDM and the college would have
been wasted - but it wasn’t even considered an option. When I sought a job
through an agency the examiner was upset I would waste my mind by not going
to college. I thought she was funny/odd.
But today (and you get to be 60 by living one day at a time - they do
add up, and quickly when looking back) Sarah, these are still your formative
years. I don’t know about Australia, but in the USA all applications and
surveys include education. Finally in 1989 I took a non-fiction writing
class and business communications class one semester at our local liberal
arts college. I was 50. But I am now able to check *some college* on any app
(that has that category). I can’t even check *1 year.*
My best to you, dear. Perhaps you can take a year off then go 1 year
just to get the credit and experience.

Sarah, I think Jan is right. Is there a junior college in Aus. that you
can attend and still work. My oldest daughter did that for the first two
years then went to a 4 year college in Archecture for 2 years and now
working on her masters. She works and goes to school. She is getting
practical experience on the job and lots of book learning. I think at
times she is burnt out and then the next semester she is thrilled with
the courses she is taking and hates to miss a day. She really will
probably go to school some how the rest of her life. I think Jan’s
teachers were so correct when they say you should never stop learning
whether you do it formally or just but reading. Anything that you can
add to a resume is to your advantage. Now that I am getting older I am
thinking about going back to get more help with my computer skills. I
think you are never to old to learn. A lot of college will let you audit
classes esp. seniors and than is getting tempting. I got my degree in
teaching many years ago and now using it again while I work with children
at the Boys and Girls club. I can not read the books as easily as I use
to but I still try. I appreciate it now that I have lost it. Take just
one course and do it well. Make some money and enjoy life but remember
all you learn is for you and no one else. Take something that you were
not able to take in high school and expand your knowlege. Becki

I was thinking of doing that actually. The course that I have applied for
is one that I’d like to do but right now I need a break so I will probably
take a year off and then do it next year, or, depending on what job I can
get, I may do it part time. It’ll take longer but at least I won’t be doing
it all the time, I’ll be able to work at the same time and have a bit of
time for myself!!

There are no junior colleges in Australia, just universities and TAFE’s
(Technical and Further Education) But you can do courses part time (my dad
is doing 1 subject at Melbourne Uni) and there are lots of short courses.
But it depends on whether or not I actually get into the course!!!

Sarah, if you can, go further with your education, knowledge is
something that NOBODY can take away from you.
