Going to SA

Sunday, November 14th, 2004

Hey, Gang,
I LOVE Marius, however, if it comes time to get on the plane to South
Africa, count me out.
I face reality. What if I would have pump failure ( I KNOW, I should always
have a back-up schedule), too many meds to remember to take and when they
check through customs will I be stopped for drug posession. Then they say
going to a diff. country and you get off the plane, you are hit with
different smells than you are used to. That could make me sick. Then the
heat that I would anticipate having there would also make me ill. I can’t
stand being in the bright sun - makes me deathly ill, (I carry a child-sized
umbrella with me in summer for shade), I’d have to lug my own water, etc.,
etc.
So, Marius, my new best friend, if/when we meet it will have to be on US
(our) soil. I’ve never even been to New York!!

Welcome Gail

Sunday, November 14th, 2004

Welcome, Gail,
I’m the wise OLD woman (w.O.w.) of this *gang.* You’ll find lots of
silliness (partly MY fault) and lots of support here. If you are all
seriousness, welllll. We do like to laugh a lot - helps the bones. We do
need your dietetic input.

Gail may want to make a comment here.
I saw a segment on tv the other day saying the Atkins Diet was meant only to
be a 2-week thing. Funny you don’t hear that too often. My thought
was/is/will be that it is not a healthy thing for a diabetic to follow. We
need all the food groups (animal rights’ lovers won’t like that, but ask the
other animals how they survive).

introduction

Hi,
My name is Pat and I am a type 2 diabetic. I have joined this list to get
information from all of you with more experience than I. I am 69 years old
and have been on blood sugar medication for about 6 years. Am I allowed to
be on your list or is this just for type 1 diabetics?
I had a 10 pound baby and there is diabetes in my family so I have been
warned for years to keep my weight down or I would get diabetes as I got
older. Well, they were right. Here I am with the disease. The numbers have
been creeping up gradually.
My questions which I need help with are: I recently was diagnosed with a
minute amount of albumin in my urine as a result of a 24 hours test. I was
surprised thinking that this showed up with diabetics with high numbers. I
am now on blood pressure medication to control the kidney albumin. Has anyone
had this experience and what should I expect?
My second problem is: I have elevated liver enzymes which started last March

As it’s my afternoonshift week, I won’t be working tomorrow.
Wednesday I won’t be here as well as I have to attend my
daughter’s “graduation” to BIG school (THAT’S more important than
work!!) and I will also be official photographer for the occasion.
I will miss you all!!!
Have a nice day….somewhere else.

Pilots

Thursday, November 4th, 2004

“The passengers on a commercial airliner have been seated and are
awaiting the cockpit crew to get them under way. A murmur is heard in the
back of the plane, and a few passengers on the aisle glance back to see the
pilot and copilot, both wearing large, dark sunglasses, making their way up to
the cockpit.
However, the pilot is using a white cane, bumping into passengers right and
left as he stumbles down the aisle, and the copilot is using a seeing-eye guide
dog. As they pass by the rows of passengers, nervous giggles are heard as people
are thinking that it must be some sort
of practical joke.
But a few minutes after the cockpit door has closed behind them the engines
start spooling up and the airplane taxis out to the runway. The passengers look
at each other with some uneasiness, whispering
among themselves and shifting uneasily or gripping the armrests more
tightly. As the airplane starts accelerating rapidly, people begin panicking.

Gang,,,I went to my diabetic local support group and someone asked about
the Atkins diet for diabetics and I thought that she was going to hit the
roof. She said that that subject was another whole lesson but she was
totally against the diet for a healthy way for diabetics to control their
sugars. She is a trained diabetic educator and felt that it was really
not the way to go. I know that we have discussed different ideas about
weight loss and weight control but she really scared me about using that
theory to control my sugars. Just a thought…Becki
