what kind of a list is this?

Hi,
I am Pat W. a new member to this list just 2 days ago. It is difficult to
break into a group where everyone are friends and talk about stuff you don’t
know anything about. Do you ever talk about diabetes? I certainly need help
with things going on with my illness. Could you suggest another list where I
might find help?

    Hi Pat
I just joined yesterday; I don’t have diabetes but I have a friend who
does plus I am a dietitian in real (such as it is) life. This seems
like a very friendly list and the folks on it seem very, very
    knowledgable.
Why don’t you ask your questions and I think you will get lots of
responses. I have done many many diabetic diet instructions so if you
have questions about diet, maybe I can help.

    Hi Pat,
We will answer any question you have about diabetes…..all you have to do is
ask…fire away. We welcome you to join in our little banter with anything
you like. We would like to get to know you also. We do talk about diabetes

and how we can better manage it. Or how the daily goings on affect it. I for
one am glad that this list is a place to talk about all aspects of our
diabetic lives. I really hope you can stay with us a while and we can give
you the support you need. If we don’t meet your needs after some time we will
understand. Everyone is different with different likes and needs. But again I
ask that you give us a chance. I personally have gotten a good amount of
information from this group and they are very supportive.

    Hi Gail,
Thank you so much for writing. I guess my main problem with my food plan,
which was set up by a dietitian is: I crave food so much in the evenings.
It is difficult to control myself. If I eat too much, then my blood sugars
    are high in the morning.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
My name is Pat and I am a type 2 diabetic. I have joined this list to get
information from all of you with more experience than I. I am 69 years old
and have been on blood sugar medication for about 6 years. Am I allowed to
be on your list or is this just for type 1 diabetics?
I had a 10 pound baby and there is diabetes in my family so I have been
warned for years to keep my weight down or I would get diabetes as I got
older. Well, they were right. Here I am with the disease. The numbers have
    been creeping up gradually.
My questions which I need help with are: I recently was diagnosed with a
minute amount of albumin in my urine as a result of a 24 hours test. I was
surprised thinking that this showed up with diabetics with high numbers. I
am now on blood pressure medication to control the kidney albumin. Has anyone
had this experience and what should I expect?

My second problem is: I have elevated liver enzymes which started last March
and are increasing. A scan of my liver showed it enlarged and a fatty liver.
No other problems showed. My endocrinologist says it might be from my
medications and has taken me off Zocor and cut down on Glucophage. He has
replaced the Glucophage with 20 units of insulin at night. We will see what
further tests show. I may need to go off my antidepressant. That will be
    difficult.
I am seeing a dietitian and working diligently on weight loss. I also
    exercise regularly.
I would appreciate hearing from any of you who might have had any of these
similar problems. I know you cannot give me medical advise but it is good to
hear from others with the same experience.
I look forward to getting acquainted with you. How many are on this list?

Pat, what kind of a diet or should I say life change has she put you
on…how many calories and carbo units is she allowing you? Have you
broken down your carbs for so much per meal, snack, etc. You might like
to much on free food in the evening like cucumbers, celery, etc just so
you have to chew and chew. The longer you chew something it tells your
brain that you are full and then it doesn’t hurt so much. Watch your
carbo intake after dinner because you are not as active after dinner and
you will need less carbos then during breakfast or lunch when you are
more active. Talk it over this the dietitian. She should be able to
help youwith it otherwise we can give you layman advice. Becki

I guess the first question I would ask is: are you eating because you
    are hungry?
Food cravings at night can be a big problem with any diet but I have
noticed they appear more psychological than real hunger. Sounds dumb
but most folks snack at night. Usually in front of the TV. Usually out
    of habit.
I knew a friends mom who lost over 100 pounds on a diabetic diet. She
saved 2 fruits for an evening snack. Her rules were they had to be
fresh fruit and something she had to peel. If an orange, she had to
peel it and eat it section by section. If an apple, she had to cut it
in eighths and eat one piece at a time. Doing this tricked her mind into
thinking she was getting more than she did and she found herself
    satisfied.
Plus the fiber in these foods filled her up.

Other suggestions are to stick with pretzels (instead of chips), air
popped popcorn (spray it with Weight Watchers Butter Flavored Popcorn
spray as it comes out of the hot air popper) or a hot drink like sugar
    free cocoa (yum).
Get the other stuff out of your house. I know, we buy the cookies for
the spouse or the kids; however, they never seem to find this stuff we
have hidden so well. If all you have to do is open up a shelf and the
cookies fall out, you are doomed. You are less likely to get in your
car and drive to the store to buy the cookies.
For me, I tend to eat later in the evening; sometimes around 8 pm.
After cleaning up, it’s almost time to go to bed. Thus, no time to
    snack.

Pat, I am so sorry, I don’t think I welcomed you to the list. I am Shelia
and I am a type 2. I take 2000mg of glucopage and Amaril once a day. I am
married with one son who is in college. We do talk about our disease on this
list. Yes eveyone is friends here and all you have to do is jump is because

the friendship is a instant one. We do keep up with each other progress and
encouraging each other when we are not doing that well. This is a real good
support group. My favorite list to be exact. I am on several other list but
this one is the one I am very loyal to.
Please tell us about you and what you are doing to control this bad boy we
have. I am real excited about another new person on this list who is a
diaetician. Her name is Gail. Please do not give up on us. Humor is a big
deal because it is so uplifing. Everyone on this list has something special
to share. I am looking forward to sharing with you and getting to know you!!
    Hugs Shelia from Texas :O)

    Hi Pat,
Pat, I am new to this list too and I don’t know much about the things that
some of these folks are talking about but they do (and so do I) talk about
diabetes to some degree but this list is much more friendly than another
list I started on some time ago.
You may need to delete the messages (as I do) that do not mean anything to you.
But, I have been a diabetic for 55 years and will give you help where I can
so ask if you care to, okay?
    Blessings, Wally.
