Why Higher BG in AM?
Hello, All :~)
I sent an email to my diabetes NP and asked why BG may go up in the AM after
fasting all night…..Here is her reply:
It occurs because of the hormonal changes that occur while we sleep. We make
hormones like cortisone, growth hormone, etc.. while we sleep. These
hormones work against your body’s insulin making you more resistant to
insulin in the early morning hours. The liver produces the sugar. This is a
good mechanism when one doesn’t have diabetes because it gives us sugar
during the fasting time of the day (while we sleep). THe effect, however is
more pronounced sometimes in diabetes. Glucophage is the best med for that.
Good question. Have a good day. Jackie
