Becki’s nurse

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Hey, Becki,
I’m dying to know what your endo said when you told him his nurse told you to
see your *primary care* physician for non-endo related stuff! I’m still
irritated thinking about that statement.

So I grabbed a muffin from the cafeteria and had that along with my
dextrosol. The rest of the morning went fine and I ate lunch at noon but I
noticed I was rather thirsty by then. So I checked bg again - now it was
18! (360 mg/dl.) Aaargh! I grabbed my insulin pen, went to the bathroom
and gave myself a quick shot of Regular to bring it down. Reminder - don’t
eat the cafeteria muffins, even when my bg is low! Have a glass of ornage
juice!
Iris,
I am glad you reminded yourself about the Dextrosol! Now we don’t have to do
it. As for the muffins…..you didn’t know ….now you do! Sounds like you
had quite a day!
I am glad your cold is better. How long is the training……sounds like it

Becki’s A1c

Monday, December 6th, 2004

Becki,
Realizing that Marius has NO idea what we talk about with an A1c, I believe
8.4 upsetting you is to compare with his *everyday* readings. That’s why I
keep encouraging him to at least aim for the single digits. He doesn’t like
it because he’s used to being in the teens. So this may help you understand
the level he is maintaining. Keep trying and don’t give up. Your illness
will naturally upset your balance. The next test may be much better. Give
the antibiotics a chance to work and you to heal up.
GAIL DARLING - how are you doing at this point? Any better? It’s time for
you to recover. 8^)

diet humor

Pat
I guess the first question I would ask is: are you eating because you
are hungry? Food cravings at night can be a big problem with any diet <snip
Plus the fiber in these foods filled her up. Other suggestions are to stick
with pretzels (instead of chips),

Just HAVE to interject this tidbit. When the diet list was changed and 15
pretzels made 1 starch serving, a friend of a diabetic told me how her
friend’s BG went sky high after eating just ONE pretzel. I CAN be
quick-witted sometimes so asked, “What size was it?” since there are so many
varieties. The reply, “One of those from the mall.” DUH. (how about 14 more
of those babies)

pneumonia shot

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

Yeah, Becki, I got that shot last year. It’s better to be safe than sorry. I
do think being well is required to get these kinds of immunizations, though.
Best and Rest to you,

Pat’s foodplan

Thank you so much for writing. I guess my main problem with my food plan,
which was set up by a dietitian is: I crave food so much in the evenings.
It is difficult to control myself. If I eat too much, then my blood sugars
are high in the morning.
Any suggestions?
What type of foodplan are you on, Pat? I use a very modified Atkins…if you
want to call it that. I don’t go crazy with the fats and protiens because of
kidneys and liver. I do keep my carbs on the low side, which in turn has
greatly lowered my BG. I try to stay at the low end of my 30-50 carbs a day
range. I was a carb addict so eating this way has greatly reduced my
cravings. It does depend what type of foodplan you are on though to make
suggestions. I am sucessful on this WOE but everyone has to find their own

Hi,
My name is Pat and I am a type 2 diabetic. I have joined this list to get
information from all of you with more experience than I. I am 69 years old
and have been on blood sugar medication for about 6 years. Am I allowed to
be on your list or is this just for type 1 diabetics?
I am so glad you reposted your intro…we have had a few new people join
(between this list and a few others I belong to) in the last few days and it
is hard to keep track. Thanks for giving us a chance.
I think I replied to your post about the albumin. I had a trace in my urine
also and the doctor said at this point it is in the reversible stage. I was
put on a beta blocker blood pressure med. I will be retested the first week
of Dec.

Intro - laser

Friday, December 3rd, 2004

Hi Doris,
I had laser surgery 12/3/98. I was in the chair for about a half hour (or
less), walked out and we went shopping. Don’t fear it. I do have a very
compassionate ophthalmalogist and have a very sensitive system. I can’t
stand anyone around my eyes (or teeth) and for the other 5 surgeries
insisted on being put to sleep. If I survived, you probably will too.
Best wishes,
Jan
insulin-dependent diabetes for 18 years. I was just diagnosed with having
the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. I’m scheduled for laser surgery.
Is there anybody else on this list who has had similar experience? Has
anybody had the laser surgery? I’m interested in learning about what the
surgery is like and what the side effects are?
