kptx

Friday, April 29th, 2005

Christine,
I’ve been on the kptx support site for awhile now and they all are
encouraging me to go through with it and not wait for the doctors to suggest
it. There’s no telling how long the wait would be anyway. At 10-15% function
is when dialysis starts. I do not want to go on dialysis if I can help it.
So beginning these proceedings now may avoid that altogether.
I briefly mentioned it to the neph the other day on the phone when he
called me about an antibiotic for that bladder infection. He said he didn’t
see anything in my history to prevent me from a tx. It’s scary, the fear of
the unknown, but the others who have had it done say they have a whole new
lease on life. Of course, it would be a different set of circumstances but I
would be without insulin injection/infusion after 49+ years!!! I will still
celebrate my 50th anniversary as planned. It is a celebration of life - not
of diabetes!

pumps

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

Gail,
I had a 506 for 6 years, then it died. Have a 507c since 3/99. BUT, don’t
worry about changing to another one. If yours should fail, I believe you
would be able to get a 507 or 507c. The basic difference in this one and the
one before is the color of case and more bells and whistles. The Act and Sel
buttons are basically the same with slight differences. Slight enough that
it would not be difficult for you to catch on. I don’t know how to use the
square wave bolus or dual wave bolus. It’s like a suped-up car - I just
drive it down the road (fast). You don’t have to use cruise and shift and
all that stuff. From what I understand about the 508, I believe that one
would be difficult for you to use. I’m not interested.
As I have mentioned before, I’m going to ask God how animals think without a
language. That is great and an added blessing. I would say at this point,
and I know brain function isn’t sharp with a hypo, but trust your dog and
test. Do you keep glucose at your bedside? I do, and since I’m alone I feel

foot report

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

Thanks, Christine,
Saw the endo first. He encouraged me to pursue a kidney/pancreas transplant.
Things won’t get better with me, only worse and kidneys are now at 23%. He
said chances are better when you get a simultaneous K/P tx than just a
kidney — many are waiting on that.
Footologist said I will probably have pain for a loooong time but not as
severe as before surgery. 8^( He also signed papers for me to get a
PERMANENT handicap card(s) - since permanent, they were no charge. I’ll show
HIM!! I’m going to not need them later. I go back Monday to get stitches
removed. Sure wish it had been my other foot — but you know about the guy
with the withered hand who prayed, “Lord, please make my hand like the other
one,” and ended up with 2 withered hands.

I have to share with you something I think is really wonderful. You
remember my hearing dog, Glory? She woke me about five this morning,
thinking she wanted breakfast I told her to go back nitey-night. Anyway I
could not get back to sleep and the longer I lay I realized something was
wrong. I got up and BG was 46. She has done this before woke me with a low
BG. How she knows I don’t know and she is not trained for that. Can you see
why she is more than just a “dog” to me.
Gail
What a blessing to have your special friend, Glory! Yup…she is more than
just a dog!

checking for air bubbles

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

how do you check for air bubbles in your pump
Jan,
Ususally someone is around, Hubby, Sister or son to help me check. If not I
can with magnifier see if air is in the syringe. Then I just run it through
the tubing hoping there is no air in the tubing. I know, I worry if
something happens to this pump, I don’t think I can see well enough to
learn a new pump. So much of this pumping is done with memory and other
little helps.

parking

Monday, April 25th, 2005

I asked the footologist last week if he had Handicap Parking cards (feet, you
know) and he said if I brought a form in he’d be glad to sign it for me. Since
we ate lunch across the street from the license bureau today, I got one. I’ll
have him fill it out tomorrow when I see him. I had a nice little route all
figured out in my mind for these people who are taking me to Endo, lunch, then
footman. I hate to ask them to take me north to the L.B. but they probably will.
So I will. They give a temporary card — my son has one good ’til 4/30/00 from
his building fall. It’s a 7-month one. Don’t know if they give 3-month ones. I
won’t abuse it. 8^)

My friend came from the next town over and took me to the next town the
other way to get my EPO shot today. That about wore me out getting ready. I
had to make sure all my clothes were nearby because if I didn’t, I’d have to
restrap my ski boot cast on just to get one thing. Can’t take a step without
it. Couldn’t stand up to put pants on so had to lie on bed and stick my legs
up in the air the way I used to dress my dollies years ago (but they were on
their heads). My neck is hurting a lot from my fall 9/23. Very disturbing.
You must have looked adorable in that position, Jan!! Hey, at least you can
still get your legs up there! Four months ago I would not have been able to
do it!
You have good friends! I am sure that is because you are a good friend
yourself. Speaking of which…where is our good friend, Marius?

I’ll pass this poem on to you

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

There is a list of folks I know all written in a book,
and every year at Christmastime I go and take a look.
And that is when I realize that these names are a part,
Not of the book they’re written in — but of my very heart.
For each name stands for someone who has walked my path sometime,
and in that meeting you’ve become the “Rhythm of the Rhyme.”
And though sometimes the list may change and not remain the same
I really feel I am composed of each beloved name.
And while you may not be aware of my special link,
Just knowing you has shaped my life more than you can think.
For once you’ve met somebody, the years cannot erase
The memory of a pleasant word or of a loving face.
So never think my Christmas cards are just a mere routine
of names upon a Christmas list forgotten in between.
For when I send a Christmas card that is addressed to you
