New In Charge Meter

Friday, March 10th, 2006

I recently left a message here asking for your help with comments on your
use of the new In Charge meter, which tests both blood glucose and
fructosamine (a measure of glucose control over a 2-3 week period). Now I
want to thank all of you who responded.
While several of you provided details of your experience with this new
meter, many more were interested in how much it costs. I don’t think that
the Web site, at www.inchargenow.com, mentions the rebate and possible trade
in.
You can actually save a lot of money on your purchase of an In Charge meter.
The initial cost of the system is $79.95. Six GlucoProtein test strips go
for $24.95, 50 glucose test strips and 4 GlucoProtein test strips for
$36.95.
However, like most meter manufacturers (see my Web page at
https://www.diabeteswebsite.com/shopper/monitorrebates.htm ) LXN offers a
rebate and a trade in. The rebate is $20 and the trade in is $45, which

any, Marius, that you float over to her? That’d be neat for her to run her

Why I sent AbA1c page

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Gang@OneList,
If you are confused about why I sent the HbA1c page instead of the HREFxxxx.
Because one of our more *prominent* members, whom shall remain unnamed,
cannot open any of those. I thought it interesting that near the end of the
page it gave both the mmol/L and mg/dl values.

The Sugarless Mind

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

This came from a Diabetes Newsletter:
The Sugarless Mind
One afternoon while sitting at my computer I noticed that my
program was not processing my keystrokes at its usual pace. Soon after I
noticed this, the screen started to flicker and suddenly went blank. My
computer still had all its vital parts, but without electricity it was
unable to process any information. As I sat there at my desk I started to
compare this situation to that of a hypoglycemic episode. When our blood
sugar starts to dip (50 to 80 mg/dl and less), we soon find ourselves not
thinking as clearly, just as my computer screeched to a halt without
electricity. If we continue on this downward spiral without correcting our
sugar level, we become just like my computer. Sure we will still have a
brain and all the other useful parts of our bodies, but without GLUCOSE,
the brain will not process the information we need to walk, talk and think.
So what happens to your thoughts as the fuel source diminishes?

In the blood, glucose binds irreversibly to hemoglobin molecules within red
blood cells. The amount of glucose that is bound to hemoglobin is directly tied
to the concentration of glucose in the blood. Since red blood cells have a
lifespan of approximately 90 days, measuring the amount of glucose bound to
hemoglobin can provide an assessment of average blood sugar control during the
