no sugar allowed

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Gang,
It seems each time Trish sends something about food, this ol’ lady
disagrees. I have posted the end of her recent message of all the diabetic
resources. Perhaps those lists always have the statement at the bottom, but
this time I happened to scroll down far enough to read it. I, again,
disagree. I have included a page that will be in my BASH booklet about sugar
in the diabetic meal plan. The *no sugar allowed* statement is an *archaic*
directive.

SUGAR AND THE DIABETIC MEAL PLAN
When the diet is planned, sugar can be included just as other carbohydrates
would. But sugar is not a “free” food (one that is non-caloric or low enough
to not be counted). It counts as a carbohydrate. Account needs to be taken
for sugar in the meal plan, i.e., if a small piece of cake is planned for
dessert, skip the roll with dinner (exchange).

Out of lurking for Iris

Good luck on your computer
I do hope you increase your food intake. Did you say you ate an orange
for lunch?
Usually if Jessica has an orange it is because she is having a low. And
then if it is lunch time she has her normal lunch. I couldn’t imagine
she would have much energy if she didn”t eat a well balanced diet.
While I understand that everybody is different, I do wish you would
have more food.
For my daughter we have so many carbs and so much meat and vegies to
eat. A balanced diet and the amount of insulin is based on her intake
of food and weight. Most of the time we have a good handle on it.
Right now we have to eat the same time each day and measure the amounts
of food. She checks her blood 4 times daily (sometimes more) and has a
shot 3 times, sometimes 4 if her number at lunch it high. We are
working on getting the pump, perhaps in April. I am not sure about the

Babs,
You are not as new as YOU feel. We value your wisdom, input, humor,
experience, and whatever else I forgot to say. We do not like for you to be
quiet and suffer your headaches alone. Your words that you feel need to be
said are a necessary part of this list - let those who want to lurk just
lurk and miss out. But without posts this list dies.
You are learning about DM, therefore, your education is valuable to someone
who may not have the same advantage you have. It’s like when my 7-y/o took
piano lessons and I was 29. I took lessons right beside her because I wanted
to learn as a REAL beginner - not as an adult that might know something (of
course, I got soooo good I quit because I didn’t want to make dau feel bad
<gr
and lunch intake has not changed, but my insulin dosages (boluses) have been
reversed in the last year or two.
I know the Canadian healthcare system is different than ours. Therefore,

orange OR chips for lunch

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

A few years ago a *friend* in our local diabetes support group wanted to
give up shots. She felt if she lost weight she would no longer need the
them; she put herself on a 500-calorie a day diet. One day they found her
with her filled syringe that she just could not take — and she was swinging
from a rope in her basement. When I saw my endo I asked him if he
knew/approved Norma being on that diet. He was shocked and said you cannot
function on that low amount. The hypothalamus will not function correctly
and confuses the brain - and causes depression.
IRIS (I want your attention that’s why I screamed) — YOU CANNOT EXIST ON
*AN* ORANGE *OR* A HANDFUL OF POTATO CHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m sitting here hundreds of miles away and can do *nothing.* OH, YES I
CAN!! I’M GOING TO CONTACT MIA AND LET HER KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. You are
self treating and not eating. You are not going to last and that is foolish.
Your mind needs to get a hold of yourself and see life differently. Death is
permanent. No going back and changing anything. No future. No rainbows. No

Music exam answers

Monday, November 27th, 2006

THESE ARE ACTUAL ANSWERS FROM STUDENTS ON MUSIC EXAMS
The principal singer of nineteenth century opera was called
pre-Madonna.
It is easy to teach anyone to play the maracas. Just grip the neck
and shake him in rhythm.
Gregorian chant has no music, just singers singing the same lines.
Sherbet composed the Unfinished Symphony.
All female parts were sung by castrati. We don’t know exactly what
they sounded like because there are no known descendants.
Young scholars have expressed their rapture for the Bronze Lullaby,
the Taco Bell Cannon, Beethoven’s Erotica, Tchaikovsky Cracknutter
Suite, and Gershwin’s Rap City in Blue.
Music sung by two people at the same time is called a duel; if they
sing without music it is called Acapulco.
A virtuoso is a musician with real high morals.

bone scan

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Gang @OneList,
Am back from my bone scan. The same gal who did the heart scan 9/21 did
this. So when I left I asked if that was it for another 6 months. ;) I had to get up on that high table even though they give a step with tall
handle and I’m not short, still had to *climb* up there. OWEEE Then had to
lie flat on my back but she let me use my pillow I took in with me (Gail &
Connie know the brown & orange ribbon one) under the small of my back. I got
to have my knees elevated for awhile, but lowering them hurt when it was
necessary. It took about 45 min. A huge camera went underneath me in
segments, then over top in segments. Not bad except for the existing pain.
However, if I hadn’t had that, I probably wouldn’t have had the bone scan!
I can’t win no how, no way. ;) bony Jan

Men baking

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Mr. Jan’s father also did most of the cooking and when he baked cakes he
used a wooden bowl and whipped with his FINGERS!! eeewwwwww.
When I visited my father 15 years ago, his wife didn’t even know how long it
took Jell-O to set. He did the cooking or they ate out.

Group,
I wanted to get this note in to you before things start hopping again.
The neighbor I wrote about last evening called and wanted to meet me and go
over some more things. So I got up (still in bed asleep). Sis and I went to
town and got coffee to go, to get our brains working. When I got home
another friend was here, so we all visited all morning. Son out from work
at lunch and just now getting on computer. 90+ messages to read. Then I
have to get a nap. So tired with this infection.
Write later.

In USA we call those dogs a *Heinz.* For those in South Africa who may not
know, Heinz is the ketchup maker (among many other foods) and their logo is
*57 varieties.*
We toured a Heinz factory in Canada once and learned that there are many,
many more than 57 varieties of foods and several different factories that
make different ones. When they got over 100, the board decided they couldn’t
keep upping the #, so settled on 57.
