forgetting

Gail,
I forgot my breakfast bolus yesterday. Luckily the Humalog can quickly bring
it down. Test immediately and correct as necessary. On that other list they
are using methods to *modify behavior* in children who forget. I think we
get so busy and it just slips our minds. Sat night at that dinner I
conducted we had salads and I told the waitress to take the orders at 6:15.
She came around and collected salad plates and I reminded her we needed to
have our meals. She then proceded to take the 31 orders and I asked her to
bring them right away. She said she just turned them in and they had to be
cooked!!!!!!!!!! 8^( I didn’t know when the meals would come so didn’t
want to bolus too early. Well, so that I wouldn’t get caught up in things
and forget to bolus because I also had cherry pie, I laid Bluda Sue on the
table so in case I got up it would flop to the floor and remind me.
Another person said, you pray before you eat, bolus before you eat. Maybe
you need to have a plan to remind you. I know it has been almost 17 years

pumping for me, BUT for 33 years I took an a.m. shot and didn’t worry about
a bolus before I ate. I think sometimes we just let it slip our minds. But,
you can correct as needed. After we were married a year or two I forgot my
a.m. NPH/R until about 9:00 at night. I called dr. and he said, “Do
nothing.” Of course, we had no home BGs then, either. Glad it’s today!

    Loretta,
Gail and I were doing *pump* talk. A pump delivers insulin in 2, no 3 ways.
A basal is the base rate, which is often set at different rates at different
times of the day to meet the individual’s basic needs to stay alive. Often a
*temporary* rate is set to override the basal of a certain period due to
increased activity or illness. A Bolus is like a burst - or in other words,
a *shot* infused by the wearer at the time of eating. We eat when we want
to, not because we have to. The basals are delivered automatically
throughout the day. Mine are set at midnight-6:00 a.m. .4u per hour meaning
that every 15 min. I get a 1/10th unit automatically infused. From 6:00-9:00
a.m. it is set for 1.6 per hour which is four times more than those early
hours. From 9:00 a.m.-midnight I receive .7 units per hour meaning every
8.75 minutes I get 1/10th automatically infused. It’s the best was to
control the diabeastie at present. 80% of pumpers use Humalog only. Many
children use a mix of Velosulin and Humalog to keep their sites working 3-4

days instead of one. My sites last about 4-5 days before I need to change an
infusion set and reservoir (which looks like a large syringe). Any other
    Q’s, feel free to ask.
